The Boix-Miller-Rosato (BMR) dataset provides a dichotomous classification of democracy covering 223 countries from 1800 to 2020. A country is coded as democratic (1) if it meets three criteria: free and fair executive elections, free and fair legislative elections, and a majority of adult men have the right to vote.

It is one of the longest-running democracy measures available and is widely used in long-run analyses of democratization and regime change.
