State Capacity Index (Hanson-Sigman)国家能力指数 (Hanson-Sigman)
Overview
The State Capacity Index measures the latent capacity of states across three mutually reinforcing dimensions — extractive, coercive, and administrative — using Bayesian latent variable analysis. Covering 190 countries from 1960 to 2015, it provides a continuous, time-varying estimate of state capacity for comparative political research.
The dataset presents the overall capacity index (higher = greater capacity, on a standardized latent scale), its 0–1 standardized variant, and the key input indicators underlying each dimension: tax revenue and political extraction (extractive), military expenditure and personnel (coercive), and census frequency (administrative).
