Asian Barometer Survey (Waves 1–6, country-level aggregates)
Overview
The Asian Barometer Survey measures attitudes towards democracy, governance and reform across East, South-East and South Asia. This dataset aggregates every wave currently released to the country level: the Wave 1-5 merged files and the Wave 6 country releases. One row is one economy in one survey year, and each indicator is a weighted share (or mean) computed with that wave's own within-country weights.
Coverage by wave - Wave 1 (2001–2003): 8 economies, survey years 2001–2003; Wave 2 (2005–2008): 13 economies, survey years 2006–2008; Wave 3 (2010–2012): 13 economies, survey years 2010–2012; Wave 4 (2014–2016): 14 economies, survey years 2014–2016; Wave 5 (2018–2021): 15 economies, survey years 2018–2021; Wave 6 (2021–2023): 12 economies, survey years 2021–2023. Wave 5 adds India and Australia to the panel; Cambodia was not fielded in Wave 5, and Wave 6 is still being released economy by economy, so the economies covered differ from wave to wave. The wave number is kept as a column so the coverage can be checked directly in the data.
Four items are hosted: satisfaction with the way democracy works, whether the country is seen as a democracy, how suitable democracy is for the country (a 1-10 mean), and trust in the national government. Response scales are not identical across waves, so the coding is set separately for every wave: in Waves 1 and 2 the satisfaction and trust scales run from the negative to the positive end and are reversed from Wave 3 onward, and Wave 5 replaced the four-point trust scale with a six-point one. Trust is therefore harmonised as the trusting side of the scale against the distrusting side - the top two of four categories, and the top three of Wave 5's six - which is comparable in direction but not category by category, so Wave 5 trust figures should be read with that in mind. Items a wave did not field are left empty (Wave 1 has no four-point democracy-extent question, Wave 3 has no suitability question).
The two South Asia (SDSA) files delivered alongside use a different questionnaire and sampling frame and are not merged in.
