Exchange rate regime classification, monthly, 1946 - 2019
Overview
Compiled by Ilzetzki, Reinhart, and Rogoff (2019) and updated to 2019, this monthly panel database provides authoritative de facto exchange rate regime classifications across global economies from 1946 to 2019. Distinct from official de jure classification standards, it adopts two-tier fine and coarse classification systems to categorize currency regimes, covering hard pegs, soft pegs, managed floats, free floats, high-inflation free-falling regimes, and dual exchange rate arrangements. The dataset further records anchor currency types and capital control conditions, effectively correcting deviations between stated exchange rate policies and actual market practices, and has become the mainstream empirical dataset for international macroeconomics and exchange rate regime research.
