Overview

The Latent Human Rights Scores measure a country's respect for physical-integrity human rights using a dynamic item-response model over multiple indicators (torture, political imprisonment, extrajudicial killing, disappearance, censorship) from 1946 to 2021. Because the model accounts for the changing standard of accountability, scores are comparable over time: an increase indicates that a country's respect for human rights has improved relative to the evolving global standard.

theta_mean is the posterior mean of the latent score; theta_sd is its posterior standard deviation. Higher scores mean better human-rights protection.
