IMF PortWatch — Daily Chokepoint Vessel TransitsIMF PortWatch —
Overview
IMF PortWatch uses satellite AIS vessel-tracking data to monitor activity and disruptions at the world's major maritime chokepoints in near real time. This page reports the daily NUMBER OF VESSELS transiting each of 28 strategic chokepoints — including the Suez and Panama Canals, the Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, the Malacca and Taiwan Straits, and the Cape of Good Hope detour route — from 2019 to the present. The figures are vessel transit counts, not trade value, tonnage, or capacity.
Sharp moves track real shipping shocks: transits through the Suez Canal and Bab el-Mandeb roughly halved through 2024 as Red Sea attacks pushed shipping onto the longer Cape of Good Hope route, making this a useful indicator of supply-chain and chokepoint-disruption risk. This version uses PortWatch's daily chokepoint transit file; the monthly port/chokepoint and disruption files are not included on this page.
